I didn't realize Chick Corea was such a ham. Nor did I realize this box set existed!
From Tim Farrell:
A video of Count Basie with a little quintet (which is semi-rare to hear compared to the glut of big band recordings). There is so much to love about this video. First of all, a few of those single notes that Basie hits, which he was legendary for, are almost even more simply genius than when BB King hits those single high notes (maybe he got the idea from Basie). Someone recently said in Esquire how they saw a show where Basie only hit one note for the whole solo and the crowd went wild.
Even better is Cleve Eaton, one of the unsung heros of Jazz bass. From the sound of the intro, Cleve just joined the band. Watch when he starts doing some extremely flashy, but still in the groove, riffs. The look on Basie's face is PRICELESS. He startles the Count, and to make an 80 year old jazz legend react with such surprise is incredibly satisfying to watch.
