We're taking our first 2 week vacation in years and years. I'm totally going to learn to sing this on beat while juggling. What a vocabular workout!
Excellent rag versions of a bunch of 1980's classics. How many can you name?
Like most boomers, my father forwards emails with crazy videos to me regularly. This appears to be the prime use of the internet for his generation. No wonder why he can't understand how I can earn a living at an internet company.
I will grant him this, his forwards are generally pretty good. I've been the focus of other's forwarding efforts before. I know the wealth of crap that gets sent around by the masses. I'm sure his inbox is flooded with idiotic stuff and he only passes on the best.
Today is a prime example. I wouldn't have visited this link, but he's earned my trust. A very cool vocal group performs an enjoyable version of Toto's Africa.
The title on this video on youtube gives it away, so just relax and enjoy the best mash I've seen this year.
I first got turned on to Curtis Mayfield while working at Bazbeaux. We had this compilation cd that we'd play for house music. Initially, I ignored the cd, but it eventually got into my subconsious. The track on that cd was "Freddie's Dead", but the base line in Superfly is one of the funkiest written in the '70's. This live cut is a good demo of the performing talents of Mr. Curtis Mayfield.
The song Superfly comes from the soundtrack to the 1972 film of the same name. Curtis had a real gift for storytelling in his lyrics. He could celebrate black culture without glorifying the negatives of ghetto life in the mid 20th century.
Plus, his voice is just beautiful.
